How long does amtrak express delivery take

Amtrak could either reroute the train over its NEC, or add the coach. They did the latter If Amtrak had little to no costs and overheads and had the space for it, it becomes a way to bring more money to Amtrak and provides at least some additional competition.

Airmail is much quicker and it has lots of route pairs available and lots of supply available from cargo planes to commercial passenger planes which also carry cargo. My last experience for shipping was from Amazon which delayed the shipping then said it was coming early, then delayed it again and it came the next day after that. They waited on a tractor trailer to fill up before they shipped it and delayed shipping over Amazon prime.

It came from a local Amazon warehouse. If package was shipped from California to NY from somewhere else, it would have arrived quicker as it would have shipped quicker and been in transit for less time. I had a gift certificate so decided to give Amazon a try.

They went from the fulfillment center to a sorting facility where it remained for awhile before it had a full load and a driver out to ship it to the post office DDU facility where it got sorted and sent to the USPS driver for delivery.

I can understand how that might have alarmed the Class 1's although what I've observed is that the business went to trucking contractors. The Class 1's never seemed to worry about the packages and bundles that were carried in baggage cars. What gets me is that Amtrak just took delivery on new baggage cars and then made that space redundant.

If getting rid of package shipments made sense, then they should have ordered combines. View attachment Later, the Pioneer split off at Denver, and then was discontinued, leaving Wyoming with no passenger trains. Last edited: Apr 14, I agree. If it is desirable to have the freight railroads do this because of congestion or climate issues, the government could provide incentives for the railroads to get into this business or partner with the truck lines and express companies.

There is one exception which is Amtrak Express. That needs to come back. It was a nice niche that required no real additional cost, and was useful for people. OBS said:. It is amazing how many people used Amtrak Express to assist in moving!

They would ship large boxes and pay Amtrak several Hundred Dollars to get the stuff moved! You must log in or register to reply here. Latest posts. Electrified Freight: Use batteries instead? Pretty cool video of a high-speed train Latest: nti Today at AM. Don't look down This is not a door-to-door service, but the extra effort required to get your stuff to and from the train stations will save you a ton of money. You may ship up to pounds per day using Amtrak Express. If you have more than pounds worth of material, you'll need to break it up into multiple shipments over multiple days.

Once your shipment arrives at its destination station, you will have 48 hours to claim it. If you fail to do so within that time frame, you will be charged additional storage fees. Anything that's this good of a deal has a catch.

Amtrak Express' catch is its restrictions—and there are a lot of them. The maximum box size is 3'x3'x3'. The maximum box weight is 50 pounds. This means no furniture or oversized items. Amtrak does not allow anything breakable, valuable, or electronic to be shipped with them, and this can be problematic as well. No appliances microwave, crockpots, TVs, blenders, etc. Since nothing breakable is allowed, you can't send dishware, either. Luckily, dishware is cheap, so I would recommend acquiring it at your destination rather than moving it anyhow.

Using Amtrak Express to ship can help you save significantly on your interstate or cross-country move. Buddahbless, CC-BY There's not a lot of published information about Amtrak Express Shipping. There is some information on their website , and you can get more information by calling Before you start packing, call Amtrak. They will be able to tell you what stations provide the service, give you up-to-date pricing information, and verify that what you would like to ship is allowed.

They will also know where exactly you need to drop off your stuff. Usually, it's a loading dock that may be tucked away on the backside of the building. Thanks, Modern Lady. Amtrak seemed like a good bargain. As Cat wrote, they've changed rates. Well cities like Florida there are plenty options available for transport however the charges of them are nominal and up to their services which are being offered by them moreover you need to consider them according to their services and reputation in market. Yall need to stop asking how much it would cost on a forum, get a calculator out, and do some math.

I have 40 Boxes different sizes and odd shaped signs. Want to Ship from NJ to Florida what would it cost.? Higher than I expected, unfortunately. For everyone who is moving across country etc. Amrak is this best way to move household stuff. My husband was a computer contractor for over 30 years. Everytime, a new and better job was offered. We shipped our stuff with them. Can't believe we are going to do it again. God is sooooooo Good. Yes, I'M 65 yrs of age. This time we're moving from Georgia to North Dakota.

Have a good move everyone. Also, always get the insurance they offer. Awesome hub! Amtrak really is an amazing and super cheap way to move efficiently.

Greyhound also offers similar service as well as "bus freight" options if you have a lot of stuff and furniture to move. Amtrak is definitely a more scenic and relaxing way to go than Greyhound though. Thanks for sharing your tips!

I didn't know about the no electronics and dishware restriction Everything was fine! I also shipped an big decorative chest, so apparently it wasn't necessary to ship in a cardboard box. Does anyone know if they will help you unload your boxes to drop off? I am afraid I will not be able to lift and move my 6 boxes which are each about 50lbs :x.

I'm moving to LA in February and need to ship kitchen items blender, knife set, dishes and house things like a mirror and curtain rods.

Can they tell if you're sending dishes? It sounds like they don't break things you send, so I'd be ok shipping my dishes through Amtrak. I moved from DC to Chicago and shipped this way. I had to go to the big station in the middle of DC because the small stations aren't equipped to do big loads, even if they offer shipping. It was like lbs, my clothing, books and kitchen stuff. They had me put it from my trunk straight onto the pallet, weighed it and immediately wrapped the whole pallet in plastic to keep it all in one big box cube.

They do not deliver door-to-door. Last edited by a moderator: Apr 7, Woa, what airline is that? Thanks everyone. I'd love to take Amtrak across the country myself but unfortunately don't have the time I need those three days looking for an apartment on the West Coast. But you are right that Amtrak may come out to be a bit less expensive depending on how many bags I bring.

Maybe on the way back! I found out from Amtrak Express: they don't accept shipments anywhere in Connecticut. That's a bit of pain for me, but I may do it to ship my bike. The 50lbs limit is an absolute limit, so no way to ship the keyboard. I'll update here once I find out more. I still can't believe I can take 10 bags on Virgin America, but I've called them up to confirm. I imagine the people at the check-in desk will be surprised or maybe they see it all the time, seeing they are the only airline that is so generous.

Quick update: Greyhound seems like the way to go. You can ship from many more locations right here in New Haven, as opposed to going to Newark , they take packages up to lbs and the rates seem cheaper than Amtrak too. I think I am going to try busfreighter. Between that and Virgin America's very generous baggage allowance, I should be all set!

More than 7 weeks until I actually make the move but this seems like it should work well. Too bad - I would rather have my money going to support Amtrak but they aren't making it easy with the strict 50lbs maximum and their unwillingness to pick up anything in New Haven.

I'd thought it was for Amtrak Express but apparently not. Joined Mar 20, Messages 9, Location x. One advantage of Amtrak and especially Greyhound over the dedicated package services like UPS and Fedex for business shippers is the fact that in many cases you may ship items that will arrive not overnite, at a premium price, but actually same day service I have seen shipped on Greyhound many examples of short-haul, perishable items such as human blood, fresh flowers, and frozen fish, etc.

There are still some airlines who don't. You must log in or register to reply here. Latest posts. Electrified Freight: Use batteries instead? Latest: jiml 11 minutes ago. Amtrak Rail Discussion.
