There she meets her roommate, Rebecca, played by Leighton Meester, who seems nice at first, but like any horror movie, things take a dark turn. That night, Tracy and Sara and their other friend, Irene, come home for a party.
That night while Tracy is in the communal bathrooms, a hooded figure comes in, and it is there where we see the hooded figure is Rebecca, who then threatens Tracy never to speak to Sara again as she only wants Sara to herself and proceeds to cut her earring out of her ear!
This ultimately ends the friendship between Sara and Tracey and we never see Tracy after this scene.
Later, we see that the kitten that was brought home into their dorm by Sara earlier in the film is meowing while Sara is out touring apartments with Irene. We see Rebecca get jealous and put the kitten in the dryer, where it blows up due to the heat. Sara forgives her until she sees that she is wearing the necklace that her deceased sister gave her, but she still decides to keep living with her. The film is an unofficial remake of the film Single White Female. Sara Matthews Minka Kelly is starting her freshman year of college.
Initially, the girls begin to bond and Rebecca learns that Sara had an older sister, Emily, who died when Sara was 9. Sara has Emily's name tattooed on her body. She also has an ex-boyfriend, Jason Matt Lanter , who keeps calling her to try to reconcile. As time goes on, Rebecca's obsession with Sara grows which causes her to become increasingly violent and that she tries to drive away anyone who could come between them.
Rebecca attacks Tracy in the shower and threatens to kill her unless she stays away from Sara. Tracy moves to another dorm, fearful of Rebecca. An old friend of Sara named Irene, who is also a lesbian, invites her to move in with them, but when Sara tells that to Rebecca, she plans to insure that Sara will stay with her by taking Sara's pet kitten, Cuddles, and puts him in a dryer offscreen.
Rebecca lies to Sara and tells her that the kitten ran away. When Sara's philandering fashion design professor Billy Zane kisses her, Rebecca plans to get the professor out of the picture to impress Sara by seducing him while recording their dialogue on a tape recorder to make it look like he was sexually abusing her. Later Rebecca lies once again to Sara by telling her she went looking for Cuddles but was raped and beaten brutally by a street thug, when in reality, the wounds on Rebecca's body are self-inflicted.
Sara feels bad for her and decides to spend the Thanksgiving with Rebecca. Stephen is not convinced that it was Sara that attacked him so the plan backfires.
Later, when Stephen and Sara do not meet as planned, they both suspect the worst. Stephen knows Sara was going to see Irene. When Sara enters Irene's house she sees that Rebecca has tied her up.
Sara tries to calm Rebecca, but Rebecca is out of her mind. Rebecca tells Sara she loves her and that is why she got rid of the ex-boyfriend, the professor, her friend Tracy, killed the cat, stabbed Stephen and now is getting rid of her friend Irene.
Stephen arrives just in time for the final violent showdown. Best part of story, including ending: It is intriguing that at first Rebecca just seems a bit odd, and to see how she becomes more and more psychotic as the movie progresses. Best scene in story: The shower scene is very dramatic and scary when Rebecca attacks Tracy. It is reminiscent of the famous shower scene in Hitchcock's movie Psycho.
Opinion about the main character: Sara actually likes Rebecca very much and if Rebecca was not a crazy nutcase, they might have become very good friends. I like that Sara is not at all judgmental of Rebecca's behavior until it gets way out of control. Click on a plot link to find similar books!
When Sara starts to do things without Rebecca strange things begin to happen. Let me first start by saying that this is not a bad movie, but it is definitely geared toward a specific age group, and it's not mine. For the year olds this will be very creepy. For the older crowd this is a definite remake of "Single White Female", but in my opinion not as good. For those who have not seen that movie this will be very creepy. For those that have seen that movie you will notice the very similar scenes and ideas.
Again this is actually not a bad movie, but if I was 10 years younger and a girl this would really scare me. If you are older like me and want to be creeped out by a movie like this one, I'd stick with the original "Single White Female". I will say the Leighton Meester, in a departure from her usual roles, did a really great job of playing a creepy stalker.
I just could not really get in to this movie. I give it a B-. Would I watch again? FAQ 4. What is 'The Roommate' about? Is "The Roommate" based on a book?
