When the number of WBCs in your body are low, you are at a higher risk of infections. It's important to work closely with your doctor to monitor your blood cell numbers and come up with strategies to prevent infections if you have cancer or are going through treatment for cancer.
Some cancers can cause your white blood cell count to increase, but more often it reduces the number of these cells. WBCs power the immune system, and both cancer and cancer treatments can reduce the number of these cells that you have available to fight infection. If you have cancer, are undergoing cancer treatment, or have a low WBC count, you will need to take precautions to prevent infections. Bone marrow and blood cancers, in particular, can lead to high blood counts as the cancer cells cause blood cells to reproduce rapidly.
Not always. A high white blood cell count could signal certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma, but it more often is a sign of inflammation or infection.
When there is a pathogen in your body, your immune system releases cells to fight it off and heal your body. This causes the number of white blood cells in your body to increase. It can vary by age and gender, but you are considered to have a low white blood cell count with less than 4, white blood cells per microliter of blood. The lower this number goes, the more susceptible you are to infections. Limiting processed foods and red meats can help ward off cancer risk. Your health care team must carefully read CBC test results. Keep in mind that many factors, including noncancerous conditions, can lead to results that fall out of the normal range. Higher-than-normal numbers of lymphocytes or monocytes can indicate the possibility of certain types of cancers. Some cancers and their treatments may cause neutropenia. Neutropenia is when a person has low numbers of neutrophils. This increases the chance of getting a bacterial infection. At times, your doctor may lower your chemotherapy dose to lower your chance of developing neutropenia.
Your doctor may also recommend medication, such as white blood cell growth factors, to increase your body's production of neutrophils, especially if you develop a fever. Low red blood cell count. You might bleed excessively from a small cut or bleed spontaneously from your nose or gums.
Rarely, dangerous internal bleeding can occur. A low platelet count can delay your treatment. You may have to wait until your platelet levels go up in order to continue with chemotherapy or to have surgery. A low platelet count can also be treated with a platelet transfusion. Unless your blood cell counts are very low, you probably won't experience any signs or symptoms and you won't be able to tell that your blood cell counts are down.
That's why your doctor may order frequent blood tests to follow your blood cell counts. Ask your doctor whether your cancer treatment is likely to cause low blood cell counts and what signs and symptoms you should be looking for.
