Thailand is cheaper for living costs than Britain. Studying Modern Languages at Exeter has been a great experience for me. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do a year abroad in Italy, and I spent the year teaching English with the British Council in a middle school in Turin. I travelled to all corners of Italy and had an amazing time soaking up the culture whilst improving my language skills.

I loved my year abroad, and feel that I came back to Exeter as a much more confident person, as well as having a high level of Portuguese. In my third year, I had the opportunity to study abroad through the Theology and Religion department. During my year in Canada I learned how to thrive in a new environment, building up both my independence and my confidence.

Places are allocated competitively so the higher your grade average, the better chance you have of going to one of your favoured locations. If your grade average is not high enough to secure one of your desired places, you will be invited to consider other locations.

Competition for places can be very strong, with many applications having very high grade average marks. Consequently some specific locations may only be viable considerations for students who gain an average in the high 60s.

This is likely to be particularly so but not exclusively for North America, Australia and New Zealand. For students of combined honours programmes, including Flexible Combined Honours, please see this page for more information.

Students who arrive at Exeter on a four-year with Study Abroad degree programme are prioritised in the allocation of placements. Previous participants have worked in a variety of areas: marketing, translation, law, TV production, fashion and with charities. Students have used the opportunity to test their future career aspirations and in the process have gained a wealth of experience they can add to their CV.

Students on Modern Language degrees also have the opportunity to undertake a teaching assistantship with the British Council for their year abroad. If you are interested in studying further afield, the option to study outside Europe is available. Some of our programmes allow one academic year abroad, usually the third year of a four-year programme. You will be awarded full academic credit for your study abroad period.

The field trips are definitely my highlight so far. We attended lectures by internationally renowned scientists and saw wildlife such as coyotes, bears and whales. It was a one in a lifetime experience.
